Here are four areas that a writer should study.
Themes: This is an area where many times subjects and topics that are unfamiliar to students can be used. Take the topic of religion for example. It is easy to look at a verse about a humble person and know what one might expect to find in that verse. However, when the topic is about a high priest, the student may find himself (or herself) needing to take a second look. Themes are very common, but students should know how to use them to their advantage. Objectivity: For the best essays, it is important to come from a place of truth. However, it is also equally important to not just be factual. Students must learn how to write from an objective viewpoint without it being false. Many essay topics are constructed with the student placing blame or his/her opinion and it is important to know how to write without having to fall back on false facts. Expressiveness: All essays will need some type of content. However, sometimes the writer needs to express themselves. Expressiveness is necessary to many students. There are many ways to express oneself, and one way to get a student to express himself/herself is to make sure the topic of the essay is something that he/she is interested in. Poems and Poetics: With so many different types of poetry being written, it is easy to forget that a poem should have a specific style, structure, and focus. Having the proper knowledge of the different styles, types, and concerns makes it easier to understand what a student should be looking for when reviewing the writing. A student should study all of the styles, types, and concerns of poetry in order to be prepared to use them when preparing their own essay. Area of concentration: This is a common mistake that a student of composition will make. When focusing on the 'theme' of an essay, one must remember that the theme has a specific point and focus. Focus alone is an area that many writers forget and it is a critical aspect of any essay. One of the best parts of a composition class is being able to look at the different areas of essay topics and to then decide which topics work best for them. For example, if a student of composition needs to learn about two different types of poetry, they should write about both and see which is more appealing to them. Students can look through many essay topics to find which topics work well for them. Then they can compare the essay topics and see which ones appeal to them the most.
